NAIT plans to cut 13 programs

EDMONTON – NAIT administrators are hoping to cut 13 certificate and diploma programs to help them deal with at $12.3 million budget shortfall.

The proposal is in front of the academic council now, and if approved Friday, would go to the board of governors and then to the province before the axe falls.

Cutting the programs would save the institution $2.8 million, said Rayne Kuntz, spokeswoman for the institution.

Sam Shaw, president of NAIT, sent an e-mail to all staff saying low student enrolment or high program costs and changes in industry expectations were all factors administration considered when they made the recommendations. “These program changes are being proposed to ensure NAIT emerges from these financial challenges stronger, with the best program mix for the future,” he wrote.

The one-year certificate programs being proposed for suspension are College Preparation, Pre-Technology Regular, Pre-Technology Accelerated, Applied Banking and Business, Medical Transcription, Aircraft Skin and Structure, Graphic Sign Arts, Marine Service Technician and Power Engineering 3rd Class.

The two-year diploma programs on the block are Telecommunications Engineering Technology, Avionics Engineering Technology, Caption and Court Reporting, and the Cytotechnologist program.

Meanwhile, four programs are still being expanded. Those are the Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Technology, Business diploma online and Nanotechnology Systems.
