Train runs down 97-year-old Salmon Arm man

The BC Coroner is investigating after a 97-year-old Salmon Arm man was struck and killed while walking on the railroad tracks Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened at an un-designated crossing point on Lakeshore Drive in Salmon Arm, about 100 metres from the Marine Drive crossing where rail warning gates had closed.

Police say Carl Shoemaker suffered from hearing loss and may not have known the train was approaching. He died on impact.

Witnesses told police the Shoemaker seemed unaware of the train’s movement along the tracks.
