Layoffs at FNUC

Some jobs have already hit the chopping block, and more layoffs are expected at the First Nations University of Canada.

Departments have been asked to identify what can be done to help, including early retirements, unpaid leaves, wage cuts and reduced benefits.

The school’s financial crisis is affecting between ten and twenty-five jobs. While there is confusion about exactly how many people have been laid off, there’s no dispute that the university is dealing with a three hundred thousand dollar deficit.

"I think it goes without saying that there are going to be cuts to faculty positions," says Randy Lundy, FNUC Academic Council Chair. "The deficit situation that we’re in right now is a result of four years of mismanagement by the senior administration."

We should learn next week if and how the FNUC will be able to access the three million dollars put on the table by the federal government earlier this month.
