SASKATOON – Construction of a $514 million expansion project began Monday at SaskPower’s Queen Elizabeth Power Station in Saskatoon.
The expansion at the natural gas-fired station will add 205 megawatts (MW), increasing net capacity to 635 MW.
“This is part of our long term plan to renew and rebuild our electrical system so that we can meet Saskatchewan’s needs today and in the years ahead,” said Robert Watson, SaskPower president and CEO.

The existing “D” Plant at the plant has three gas turbines with a current net capacity of 430 MW.
The expansion will add another three turbines.
Exhaust will then be used to generate steam that will power a new steam turbine generator. It increases the cycle efficiency substantially.
During construction, 250 to 300 contractors will be required and the project will also create 20 permanent positions.
Site construction is expected to be done by July 2015.
After the expansion, enough capacity will be added to power an additional 205,000 homes.
Throughout Saskatchewan, the demand for power is increasing 2.6 per cent annually.
