EDMONTON- A Fort McMurray man is dead after a boat hit a sandbar on the Athabasca River Saturday night.
RCMP were called to the collision just before 9:00 p.m. It happened on the Athabasca River, about 140 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.
Officers say the boat was carrying two people when it hit a sandbar in the river, throwing one man from the boat.

Officers say a 45-year-old Fort McMurray man was killed in the collision. Another man, a 59-year-old also believed to be from Fort McMurray, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, RCMP said Sunday morning.
Military and RCMP helicopters were called in to assist with the rescue and recovery.
The investigation is ongoing, but RCMP say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision.
The victim’s name is not being released.
