CALGARY- An engineering firm hired by the Town of Canmore has developed a flood mitigation strategy, following the devastating June flood.

Cougar Creek spilled its banks, destroying a number of homes as it turned into a raging river.  BGC Engineering says one goal it has come up with is to keep debris like rocks and trees from flowing downstream.

They also want to prevent bank erosion in the creek channel, by installing steel mesh and nets.

Last week, town council approved the construction of short-term mitigation measures in Cougar Creek. The province will fund most of the project, while Canmore has come up with $1.3 million from a reserve fund.
