CALGARY – One year after announcing an end to their population cap, Officials in Okotoks say they are hoping to accommodate the town’s future growth by acquiring more land from the MD of Foothills.
The announcement was made after the completion of a year-long growth study.
The study suggests the town will grow to a population of about 82,152 in the next 60 years, an increase of about 203% over the estimated 2013 population.
The new land would be used to accommodate residential, commercial and industrial growth to 2073.

Town Council says the first steps to obtain the land will be to give a written notice of the proposed annexation to the MD of Foothills, and explain what land they’re hoping for.
The areas within the proposed annexation are:
North: consisting of proposed residential and neighbourhood commercial areas along 338 Ave E, 32
St E and 48 St, between Highways 2 and 2A.
West: consisting of proposed residential areas along Big Rock Trail north of Highway 7.
South: consisting of proposed residential and neighborhood commercial lands south of Highway 7.
Southeast: consisting of proposed highway commercial and industrial lands to the southeast of the
current Southbank Industrial Park.
Officials will be consulting the public during the process, and plan to hold at least three meetings with affected landowners.
The town is still struggling to deal with their scarce water supply. The town relies on the Sheep River, which only provides enough water for some 30,000 people – a number the town’s population is quickly approaching.
