Edmonton student dies on high school ski trip

EDMONTON – A Grade 10 student is dead after he hit a tree while on a school ski trip to Panorama, B.C.

Skyler Lockwood of J. Percy Page High School was wearing a helmet when the accident happened at about 11 a.m. Monday. He was taken off the hill by helicopter after the accident and flown to Invermere hospital.

"He was a young lad who was full of life, and full of Page spirit and Page pride," said school principal Audrey Gibson.

Lockwood was with other students when the accident happened. School officials could not say on Monday whether he was skiing or snowboarding.

Thirty-four students, accompanied by three teacher chaperones, had been transported by bus to the ski resort on Sunday afternoon, she said. The annual student ski trip normally includes two full days of skiing, and the students had been scheduled to return home Tuesday.

After Monday’s accident, the remainder of the trip was cancelled. Students are expected to arrive back in Edmonton Monday night.

The Edmonton Public School Board defines ski trips as a high-risk activity. As such, the policy requires all students attending to have a waiver signed by their parents or guardians.

Acting superintendent Donna Barrett told a news conference Monday that the accident will prompt a review and possible revisions of the field trip policy.

Grief counsellors were brought into the Mill Woods school.
