FNUC has renewed hope

The First Nations University of Canada hopes a new agreement with the University of Regina will be enough to get its funding back.

After hearing yesterday the federal government will not reinstate the $7.2 million worth of funding back into the struggling institution, the U of R announced today that it is close to reaching a partnership agreement with FNUC.

Yesterday representatives from FNUC met with Minister of Indian Affairs Chuck Strahl in Ottawa to try and convince him to reinstate the funding the government pulled last month. Today University of Regina President Vianne Timmons spoke about the partnership which will see FNUC operate financially through the U of R.

“All parties have indicated there is still work to be done to bring those discussions to a positive conclusion," Timmons said. "I look forward to the completion of the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the new partnership between First Nation University and the University of Regina."

On Monday Saskatchewan’s Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Rob Norris will meet with Minister Strahl to discuss the university’s future.
