Saskatoon’s only film school opens next year

SASKATON – Aspiring moviemakers aren’t letting Saskatchewan Film Employment Tax Credit cuts keep them from doing what they love.

Students have enrolled in Saskatoon’s only film program which starts up in January.

It’s the first program of its kind in nearly a decade and is held at the Recording Arts Institute of Saskatoon (RAIS) alongside its audio engineering program.

Instructors say despite the government’s cuts, there’s still a need for this type of program in the Bridge City.

“It’s been a long time since there’s been something like this offered for students,” said School Director Sean Pion.

“They had to leave the province [for schools with] huge tuitions, and living away from home can be expensive, so there was a need for it here in town.”

Film students can expect to do it all, from music videos to commercials and even documentaries.

Pion said he would love to create a film festival at the Roxy Theatre to showcase the students’ work one day.

The six-month program is hands-on and currently accepts ten students a semester.

RAIS is still accepting applications for January’s intake.

In the province, the University of Regina also offers film studies.
