Watch: Difference between pasteurized and raw milk cheeses

Fourteen products were recalled from a cheese making farm in Salmon Arm after an E.coli outbreak that left at least 11 people sick.

All the recalled products at Gort’s Gouda Cheese Farm were made with raw or unpasteurized milk.

While raw milk is banned for sale in Canada, cheese made with raw milk is allowed, as long as it has been aged for 60 days.

That, according to Health Canada, makes it generally safe to consume.

However, some experts disagree.

“There are several peer reviewed literature reports that show that E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria can survive for 90 days, 120 days…so this aging process isn’t effective,” says UBC microbiologist Kevin Allen.

Allen says regular testing isn’t enough because the only way to guarantee safety would be to test 100 percent of the product.
