Watch: Far side of the moon viewed in hi-res

TORONTO – You may look up at the moon, but you’ve never seen it like this.

The moon is tidally locked with Earth, which means we only ever see one side of our satellite. However, a wide-field camera aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) photographed the entire moon over a lunar month – 27.5 days.

The video starts off with the side we are all familiar with and quickly transitions to the far side.

And Pink Floyd had it wrong: there isn’t actually a “dark side of the moon.” As is seen in the video, the sun does indeed illuminate it. From our point of view, however, that side constantly remains in shadow.
