No new education changes planned: Morgan

REGINA – Saskatchewan’s new education minister says there won’t be any immediate policy changes under his watch.

Don Morgan was appointed in Premier Brad Wall’s cabinet shuffle on August 13.

Morgan says new anti-bullying and First Nation/Metis education initiatives are still going ahead as planned in Saskatchewan schools, while further review of standardized testing continues.

That controversial change was put on pause after parents and teachers spoke out.

The minister won’t commit to a timeline on the consultation process.

Morgan is also putting a priority on capital and school infrastructure.

“Having a leaking roof or heating system that doesn’t work can be just as damaging to students’ education as improper material or staffing,” said Morgan. “It’s important to make sure we have good buildings and portables in the right places at the right times.”

Morgan says the province is still working to catch up on delivery and installation of portable classrooms due to weather delays.
