Local expo brings out the ‘geek’ in the Prairies

SASKATOON – Local pride is strong and enthusiasm is contagious at the first-ever Saskatchewan Entertainment Expo held over the weekend in Saskatoon.

Hundreds of fans descended on Prairieland Park to show off some costumes, flip through comics and collect memorabilia.

Saskatchewan’s very own celebrity, Kim Coates, rolled up to the convention on his motorcycle to greet fans. Coates plays Alex “Tig” Trager on the television series “Sons of Anarchy.”

“The Smoking Man” from the X-Files, William B. Davis, also showed up to the convention. The actor has worked on a number of shows in our province and enjoys visiting here.

“I did a series here in Saskatoon, Body and Soul, a few years ago. I’ve done shows in Regina and directed plays in Regina,” said Davis.

Davis said conventions like this one are important for allowing fans to connect with actors.

“In live theatre you do connect because you can actually perceive that relationship happening, so that’s one thing that’s lovely about {conventions}, we actually communicate together,” he explained.

Hundreds of different action-hero costumes were dusted off for the occasion and worn with pride.

“It’s all about kinda feeling kinship with a character, and I think when they dress up as that character, it really really shows that, ‘I really like wolverine, I like that attitude, or I really like batman, I can relate to batman, ” said organizer Chris Bernhard.

Organizers hope the local expo will continue for years to come.
