Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society looking for a new home

Sasa the Bald Eagle was in need of help three weeks ago.

The juvenile bird had impaled herself on a tree branch in Fort Langley and needed surgery to mend a fist-sized hole in her wing. She was not expected to survive the trauma, but today she is mending well and could be released one day, thanks to the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL).

But now it is OWL that needs rescuing.

The lease on the Delta property they have rented for the last 25 years is up and there are concerns it will not be renewed. But even if that is worked out – the not-for-profit rehab facility has outgrown the five-acre site.

What they want to do is purchase a 41-acre property down the road. The plan would be to rebuild their facility on 10 acres of the land and lease the rest out to farmers. It would reduce their dependence on the generosity of donors and give them a permanent home.

But while they have already raised $500,000 towards the purchase of the acreage they have a long way to go.

The asking price is $3.3 million dollars.

But they are undaunted by the enormity of the fundraising task ahead. This is a society that specializes in beating the odds.

Sasa is just one good example of that.
