HALIFAX – Environment Canada says up to 100 millimetres of rain could fall in parts of Nova Scotia before Gabrielle makes its way to Newfoundland.

The tropical depression had already dumped as much as 60 millimetres of rain on parts of southwestern Nova Scotia by mid-afternoon Friday.

Rainfall warnings remained in effect for much of mainland Nova Scotia, parts of Prince Edward Island and the Iles-de-la-Madeleine.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre says Gabrielle was expected to produce wind gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour on the eastern mainland of Nova Scotia and in Cape Breton.

Rain was forecast to begin falling in Newfoundland’s northern peninsula late Friday and amounts could exceed the range of 30 to 40 millimetres through Saturday.
