Temperature records broken as Edmontonians enjoy the dog days of summer

EDMONTON- Whether it was at a pool, patio or park, Edmontonians were outside Thursday, soaking up the hottest September 12th on record.

“It’s excellent. Finally some summer,” Eliese Grosvrink exclaimed as she enjoyed the day with her sons at Kinsmen Spray Park.

Several temperature records were broken across Alberta Thursday, including in the City of Edmonton where the mercury hit 30.3 degrees celsius. The previous temperature record was set 69 years ago in 1944 at 29.4 degrees celsius.

“We’ve had 22 across the province today, 22 records,” Global Meteorologist Nicola Crosbie said. “We’ve broken the record at the International (airport), new record set in Camrose, new record set in Fort McMurray, new record set in Lloydminster, Cold Lake, Jasper 31.8 (degrees celsius), Red Deer breaks a pretty old record set in 1960.”

“All in all, awesome day,” Crosbie added.

Thursday was only the 11th time since 1981 that the City of Edmonton hit 30 degrees in September. And only the third time this summer.

“We had a lot of rain in May and June and then it’s just been a day here and a day there. So when we get these awesome days I like to be outside and take advantage of the weather,” Grosvrink explained.

And she wasn’t alone. People across the Capital Region flocked outside to enjoy the heat.

“It’s nice to see everyone out here enjoying the sun together,” said a young man who was suntanning at Queen Elizabeth Pool. “Right now, I’m loving it. Every day that the sun hits, it’s like one last hit of summer before the winter comes.”

And come it will. But for now, Edmontonians can prepare to enjoy at least a few more nice days, as temperatures are expected to hit 26 degrees celsius on Friday, 22 on Saturday and 24 on Sunday.
