Edmonton – Fire crews were called to a house fire in south east Edmonton shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday.
Neighbour Huby Vanameyde says he woke up at around 4 a.m. to the smell of fire and the sound of crackle.
“We looked out the bathroom window and there was a glow across the street.”
Vanameyde says he and another neighbour rushed to the front door of the affected house to notify those inside of the situation.
“We could hear the people yelling inside the house, and as far as we know, they went outside the backdoor with some pets and that’s the last we’ve seen of them.”
Two people have been displaced by the fire. Vanameyde says the affected residents moved into the home this week.
Several fire trucks were dispatched, along with EMS, to the home near 14 ‘A’ Avenue and 51 Street in the Sakaw Neighbourhood.
The blaze was brought under control within half-an-hour and put out completely just after 5:30 a.m.
Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze and extent of the damage.
Vanameyde believes the blaze started in the basement.
“From the sounds of it they had a fire going in the fireplace in the basement, and the chase on the exterior of the house is what’s burned,” says Vanameyde.
