A 16-year-old teen boy is dead after being stabbed in Côte-des-Neiges on Monday afternoon, Montreal police confirm.
Authorities said they were called to Van Horne Avenue near the Victoria intersection at 3 p.m. for an altercation between teenage boys.
The suspects had fled the scene and emergency services found the the victim in critical condition with stab wounds to the upper body. He had entered a nearby school to ask for help.
He was rushed to hospital where he later died of his injuries.
English Montreal School Board (EMSB) spokesperson Michael Cohen confirmed on Tuesday the victim was a student at Programme Mile End alternative school.
The school, for students in Grades 10 and 11, shares a building with Coronation Elementary School.
Both schools were closed on Tuesday with a lone sign on the steps calling for an end to violence.
Cohen said help will be available for those who might need it.
“Staff members saw this,” he said of the stabbing outside the school. “This is a terrible experience for anyone to have to go through and we have a trauma unit that is springing into action.”
Montreal police spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron said no suspects have been arrested but they are looking for three teenage boys aged 16 to 18.
School officials said they don’t believe they and the victim attended the same school.
The investigation will be relying heavily on numerous security cameras in the area.
A perimeter was set up on the scene and forensic investigators from the major crimes unit are investigating the killing.
This marks the city’s 25th homicide of the year.
Both schools are expected to reopen on Wednesday
