Feds boost research for healthier canola crops

Federal government announces an investment for SaskCanola that will help farmers across Canada increase their competitiveness. File / Global News

SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan canola industry is partnering with the federal government.

$5.6 million will be invested over five years to accelerate canola research to help Canadian farmers increase their competitiveness.

Canada is the world’s largest exporter of canola seed, meal and oil with Saskatchewan producing nearly half the country’s canola.

The focus of the research will be on diseases that have a significant impact on production.

“At the end of the day there is work to be done on disease that continues to haunt market access and so on… Blackleg and sclerotinia that is what this research will be targeted towards,” said Gerry Ritz, federal agriculture minister.

Over the five years, the federal government will invest up to $4.2 million with $1.4 million coming from Alberta and Saskatchewan producers.
