Old Pastime Makes a Comeback

An old craft is gaining serious steam. Sewing. And it’s not just your grandmothers hobby anymore.

"We’ve had a lot of young people that have come in to learn how to sew and buy machines and take lessons," says Barb Bilenki, a seamstress at Carellan Sewing Centre on Academy road in Winnipeg.

Their beginner sewing classes are bursting at the seams.

It’s believed the trend is fueled by penny pinching consumers, and popular fashion and interior design shows.

"People sort of look at that and say ‘ well, I can do that, I should be able to do that,’" Bilenki says.

33 year old Sarah Granovsky took her first sewing class just a couple months ago and says she’s hooked.

" I think a lot of clothes are so high priced and not well made for what you pay for. And i think it’s ingenious to make something like a shirt."

Granovsky’s already signed up to learn how to sew skirts with a group of girlfriends.

According to Bilenki, sewing machine sales are up at least 20 per cent over last year.

"Sewing is cheaper than a psychiatrist, maybe that’s why!"

Or maybe it’s that people walk away with the basics under their belt, cheap gift ideas, and a burst of creativity.
