Woman pinned under transit bus; critical injuries

A 30-year-old woman sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a community transit bus in Burnaby shortly after 10 p.m. last night.

RCMP say the woman was in a marked crosswalk at Willingdon Avenue and Maywood Street when the bus rounded the corner and struck her. The pedestrian was pinned underneath the bus and witnesses helped to remove her from under the rear wheels of the transit vehicle. She was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital and is in critical condition.

Investigators say it was raining heavily at the time and the victim, who has yet to be identified, was wearing dark clothing.

Police have two witnesses, which include one passenger and the bus driver. The driver, a woman in her 60s, required sedation after the accident and was taken to the hospital to be treated for shock and emotional trauma. Police are hoping to interview her in the next few days.

At this point, investigators believe this was an accident and there was no criminal intent to striking the pedestrian.
