Police swarm Don Mills school after girl, 15, threatened with death

Toronto police swarmed a Don Mills high school on Monday after a 15-year-old female student received a death threat.

An anonymous male called Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute, located at Don Mills Road and Overlea Boulevard, around 1 p.m., said Constable Tony Vella.

“He indicated he wasn’t happy with the girl, said he had a gun and was willing to use it, and he was on the third floor of the school,” said Const. Vella. Police believe the caller to be a 16-year-old from Durham who doesn’t attend the school.

The police were phoned, the girl was removed and the threat was announced over the PA system. Doors were locked, windows were shaded and students were moved to corners of classrooms.

Police cruisers surrounded the building during the three-hour lockdown, while about 100 concerned parents and students who had be out of the building gathered at a 7-eleven across the street. Over 1,800 students attend the school.

After a search, Vella said the caller was not in the building. At 3:46 p.m. students were released.

Although there was some concern, Alex Blidaru, 17, said he and his classmates remained calm.

“We could hear the police walking through the halls, but nobody really panicked,” he said.
