Swastikas scrawled on Calgary Jewish landmarks

CALGARY – City police are searching for whoever spray-painted swastikas and anti-Semitic slogans on Calgary’s Holocaust War Memorial, the Calgary Jewish Centre and some nearby fences and mailboxes.

"Out interest is that the police will aggressively treat it as a hate crime and make it a priority to bring those responsible to justice," said Frank Dimant, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada.

"Otherwise, we find that too often, police forces are reluctant to treat these incidents as hate crimes and they simply let it slip by the side. We don’t want that. A message has to be loud and clear that Canada will not tolerate hate crimes."

Dimant said his organization has seen a rise in hate crimes in the past 10 years in Canada.

An Alberta Hate Crimes Committee study recently said there were 68 hate crimes reported in Calgary last year.

Police say the vandalism happened late Saturday or early Sunday.
