A tribute to fallen Edmonton firefighters has been vandalized.
The Edmonton Firefighters Memorial Society said some bronze plaques have been taken from the bell tower at Firefighters Memorial Plaza.
They contain the names of members killed in the line of duty.
“Those are names of our friends, our brothers, our fallen that we are trying to remember, recognize and honour. To have them removed, vandalized is very disheartening,” said society director Rob Cavell.
In a series of tweets, the society said it’s concerned they might be sold for scrap.
The society called them important tributes to not only those who died while serving the city, but their families as well and are asking for them to be returned.
The name of Brenda and Raymond Renaud’s son, Marc, was on one of the plaques that were stolen. He was a city firefighter who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and took his own life in 2018.
“Very sad to see that,” Brenda told Global News. “To me, it’s like a cemetery marker that was taken from us because we do come down here and look at it and kind of have our memories of Marc and his profession, what he offered to the city of Edmonton.”
The group is asking anyone with information to come forward, adding the plaques can be dropped off at any City of Edmonton fire station.
