Just after midnight Sunday, Calgary firefighters were called out to the 100 block of Sherwood Crescent N.W. to find a two-storey home engulfed in flames, with flames shooting from the building, threatening neighbouring houses. A second alarm was called to make sure there were enough resources on scene, the Calgary Fire Department said in a statement.

Acting district chief Kevin Wiens said they immediately began an aggressive exterior attack on the blaze.

“We employed deck guns and large volume hand lines right off the bat and set up two water towers to put the fire out at that point.”

Residents from the homes were able to get out safely and there were no injuries reported.

Calgary police helped with evacuations and crowd control.

Sherwood resident Dilyar Askar heard the sirens from a couple of blocks away and walked over to see what was happening. Askar says he couldn’t believe how big the flames were.

“It’s nothing like you see on TV,” said Askar. “Once we got here, there were about 100-200 neighbours coming and showing how bad they feel for the family.”

Oluchi Okoro, who lives across the street from the home where the fire started said she isn’t sure where the family will go now.

“How are they going to cope with all of this? I know they’re going to be displaced. I’m not sure how long, but they’re going to be displaced.”

Fire crews, including a fire investigator, were still at the home as of Sunday morning to make sure there were no flare ups. It’s unclear what caused the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
