There have been calls to either dramatically reform or abolish the Senate after allegations that a handful of senators misused public money by making improper housing or travel-expense claims.

The scandal has resulted in the departures of a number of senators — including Conservative Senator Mike Duffy of PEI — from their party caucuses.

The federal government asked the Supreme Court in February to clarify the government’s powers to reform or abolish the Senate and the court will hear arguments this fall.

The Conservative government has said it should be able to reform the Senate without reopening the Constitution.
