DFO cracks down on illegal salmon poaching on the Fraser River

Fisheries officials are stepping up efforts to catch salmon poachers this weekend as they enforce a fishing ban on the Fraser River.

While much of the Fraser River remains restricted, with high water temperatures and low sockeye salmon returns, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans says there’s been poaching and illegal sales of the fish.

Over the past 10 days, officials have seized eight boats and 50 gillnets in their efforts to crack down on poaching.

Overnight monitors and aerial surveillance have been put in place between Hope and Surrey to catch illegal fishing activity.

Officials are reminding people that it’s not just illegal to sell unauthorized seafood, it’s also illegal to buy it.

If caught, the fine is up to $100,000 dollars.
