REGINA – Regina is a booming city and with that growth comes challenges as well. As part of the Official Community Plan that outlines city development in the years ahead, the city is considering annexing several parcels of land in the RM of Sherwood.

On Thursday a public meeting was held at city hall that gave residents and stakeholders in the official community plan an opportunity to share their thoughts.

About a dozen residents took to the podium with many of them expressing concerns about the possibility of increased taxes, road maintenance, and logistics.

“Well I either wanted to be in the city or in the RM,” said concerned resident Lori Kerr. “I prefer to be in the RM and not have my land cut in half like it is.”

According to Ward 8 councilor Mike O’Donnell, 47% of landowners support the decision to annex the land while 11% oppose the idea and the rest are neutral.

Meanwhile, Regina mayor Michael Fougere maintains that expanding city limits is necessary in order to deal with a growing population.

“We believe that our population will grow to 500,000 people in the next three to four years and this is about securing our land to make sure we have that available,” Fougere said. “This is reasonable growth that’s best supporting growth we have seen for a number of years.”

Council will be voting on the boundary alteration on September 9th.
