MONTREAL – The city’s transit system has dropped a $219 fine given to a woman who was caught riding the bus without a ticket.

On July 26th, Pauline Tantost was heading home on the 105 bus to Verdun.

It was after 10pm and she had just taken her sick son to the Children’s Hospital.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

She didn’t have exact change for the bus fare and the driver refused to take her 5$ bill.

Tantost said she was so exhausted, she just sat down.

The driver warned her that if she stayed on the bus without paying, she risked being fined if an inspector came aboard.

Surely enough, inspectors eventually boarded the bus and gave her a hefty fine.
