EDMONTON – RCMP say two people have been killed in a serious collision west of Edmonton, just south of Stony Plain on Thursday afternoon.
Around 1 p.m., Stony Plain RCMP responded to the crash involving a semi truck and a smaller passenger vehicle.
“Unfortunately, we had two fatalities,” said Staff Sgt. Steven Bergerman, with Stony Plain RCMP. “It’s certainly a tragic event, so our hearts do go out to the family.”
The driver of the semi truck was not seriously injured.
Secondary Highway 770 at Secondary Highway 627 has been closed to traffic because of the crash. Traffic is being diverted onto Highway 627 for all northbound traffic. Southbound motorists are advised to take alternate routes north of the intersection.
Around 1 p.m. STARS air ambulance was called out to the scene, but was later stood down.
A man who identifies himself as a volunteer firefighter from the Stony Plain area wrote the following message on Twitter: “Avoid Highway 627 at Highway 770 major accident.”
Stony Plain RCMP is investigating the crash and members are waiting for the RCMP Traffic Analyst to arrive on scene.
Officers say there will be periods of time when both highways will be closed.
