Canada election results: London–Fanshawe

NDP incumbent Lindsay Mathyssen is projected to be re-elected in the riding of London Fanshawe.

Incumbent New Democrat Lindsay Mathyssen is projected to be re-elected for a second term, and continuing the party’s longtime hold on the riding. Mathyssen, who was first elected in 2019, is daughter of the riding’s former NDP MP, Irene Mathyssen, who represented the riding from 2006 until 2019.

“I am so grateful to the people of London Fanshawe for putting their faith in me again. I really love my job and being able to continue to fight for people, to provide that support, to help them in whatever way that I can, that means a great deal to me,” Mathyssen said.

The riding has been dominated by the NDP for a majority of its 24 year history. The only other person to represent the riding was Pat O’Brien, who served as a Liberal from 1997 until 2005, and as an Independent from 2005 until 2006 after he left the governing Grits, largely, because he opposed the government’s recognition of same-sex marriage.

The London–Fanshawe riding is located in southwestern Ontario. It includes a section of Middlesex and London.

The riding has had a consistent NDP leadership, with MP Irene Mathyssen having held the seat from 2006 until 2019 when she announced her retirement.

Her daughter, Lindsay Mathyssen, also of the NDP party, won the seat in 2019 with 40.8 per cent of the vote.

Prior to that, the Liberals held the seat in 1997, 2000 and 2004.

Almost 28 per cent of the riding’s population works in sales and services, according to the 2016 census.
