Emergency crews were called to a third-floor unit at Stoneybrook Manor, a 60-unit affordable housing complex built in the mid-1980s, on Stoney Brook Drive, located near Gray and Queenston roads, just before 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

In a statement released late Wednesday, Chief Dave Cunliffe said the fire was concentrated on the western wing of the complex.

“(It) was quickly spreading with flames breaking through the roof. Firefighters with the help of Hamilton Police were quickly assisting residents to evacuate their apartments and begin aggressive interior firefighting operations,” he wrote.

Cunliffe said it took more than 50 firefighters over the course of 30 to 40 minutes to get blaze under control. In the end, five units were damaged by the fire and 13 units were damaged due to smoke and water.

In total, 25 residents needed to be housed at a local hotel due to the incident. Meanwhile, power was restored to the eastern half of the complex late Wednesday and those residents were allowed to return inside.

Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal says the fire is not considered suspicious and an investigation is on-going.

Damage to the facility is estimated at about $3 Million, according to the province.
