Pokémon masters crowned in Vancouver

Hundreds of young Pokémon trainers travelled across the land to try and become the very best – like no one ever was.

But only six people came away as Pokémon masters at the 2013 World Championships.

Held in Vancouver for the first time, children from over 30 countries played in either the video game or card trading competition in three different age brackets.

The Pokémon brand, created in 1996 in Japan, became a worldwide phenomenon at the turn of the century, but has continued to be popular in its cartoon, video game, card and toy forms for many years.

The best result by a Canadian was by Surrey’s Joey Gaffney, who advanced to the semifinals in the Senior Division Card Trading competition before losing to Australia’s Kaiwen Cabbabe.

Over $100,000 in scholarships were awarded over the course of the weekend.
