DEER LAKE, N.L. – RCMP have confirmed they have found three sets of human remains in the ruins of a burned-out cabin in western Newfoundland.

The cabin was destroyed on Tuesday after a fire broke out on Whitewash Road near Deer Lake, about 50 kilometres northeast of Corner Brook.

The Mounties say the cause of death is still unknown, including whether the victims died before, during or after the fire.

Police say they expect the province’s chief medical examiner to complete autopsies on the remains early next week.

The incident is being treated as a criminal investigation.
