EDMONTON – The City of Edmonton specified its policies that outline the options available for local food trucks and street vendors when it comes to parking and operating hours.
“The changes mean we will see more vendors in all areas of the city, not just in the downtown core,” says Kathy Stanley. “Edmontonians already have some of the best options in the country, and now they will be able to enjoy the food truck experience close to their own front door.”
Under Edmonton’s policies, street vendors can operate until 3 a.m., unless they are in a city park. In a park, they can operate until 11 p.m. or the stated closing time of the park.
David Holehouse, a Communications Officer with the City explains the hours of operation were always 3 a.m. outside of parks, but many vendors thought the 11 p.m. park hours applied to them no matter where they were operating.
Street vendors and food trucks can also operate in areas other than downtown. For instance, businesses can set up shop near sports fields or recreation centres.
The City says there were no rules prohibiting businesses from operating in these areas before, but the new policies clarify the option.
In a news release, the City says it is seeing vendors from other municipalities in Alberta come to Edmonton “to make the most of the City’s relatively open and welcoming approach to the street food scene.”
“Edmonton really is blazing new trails with its street vending policies,” says Stanley. “It continues the City’s drive to create more liveable and walkable neighbourhoods. We look forward to continuing this dialogue.”
The City has been looking more closely at the issue recently, and has been in contact with more than 70 street vendors during the process.
The City’s Street Vending Coordinator says all vendors are welcome to participate in developing a better atmosphere for businesses.
