Kingston police take man into custody following apartment fire

Kingston police have arrested a 24-year-old man following an apartment fire in the city Monday.

Firefighters, Frontenac paramedics and multiple police cruisers were called to Treeview Apartments on Division Street sometime after 1 p.m. to respond to a fire.

Kingston Fire and Rescue said that the fire was quickly extinguished and the building was evacuated.

“One tenant was rescued from their balcony. Five individuals were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, as a precaution,” Kingston Fire said.

Kingston police said one man was arrested during the investigation of the fire.

“There are grounds to believe a 24-year-old local man deliberately set a fire originating on the third floor,” Kingston police said in a statement.

The man was brought to hospital for assessment and will be brought back to Kingston police headquarters afterwards to answer to arson-related charges, police say.

There were no known injuries. Four police officers were assessed for smoke inhalation but appear to be fine, police said.
