SASKATOON – The 20th Street West Streetscape Improvement Project is underway to not only create a vibrant retail corridor, but to also celebrate Riversdale’s heritage.
Phase One of the project broke ground on Tuesday along 20th Street between Avenues E through F.
“For years things were in decline over a period of time but we’ve turned that corner and people are moving back into Riversdale, businesses are coming back here, opening up, it’s exciting and what this project does it helps to beautify,” said Mayor Don Atchison.
Work consists of a new sidewalk and amenity strip installation, new street furniture, banners and three public art projects.
“The completion of this new streetscape and creative design elements within it will demonstrate our cultural fabric and continue to revitalize the commercial district for new generations to enjoy,” said Randy Pshebylo, Riversdale BID executive director.
The $1.25 million phase is being funded by the Business Improvement District (BID) Reserve Program.
Businesses will remain open during construction, which is expected to be completed in October. The project will have some traffic restrictions along the way.
Phase Two will continue on from Avenues F to H and is expected to be completed during the summer of 2014.
