Southern Alberta shines in feature film

It’s easy to see why Southern Alberta’s scenery has become a go-to set for feature films. Rolling hills, mountain streams, and of course a Main Street right out of the 1900’s.

“It’s that historic atmosphere when they’re looking for an old Wyoming town or an old Montana town,” said Fort Macleod Mayor Shawn Patience.  “They want to film in Canada, then Fort Macleod is often a stand in.”

The historic Main Street block is about to be put in the spotlight, and many businesses have already been approached by location scouts for Christopher Nolan’s new film: Interstellar. For some, having a film crew in town is old hat, for others, a new opportunity to make their mark on Main Street.

“It was neat coming in to see when they did the Passchendaele [movie] because there was such a transformation with most of the storefronts with that movie,” said Carie Marsh, an employee at Puff’s Floral Designs on Main Street.

“This will be the first, we just moved in about a month ago so it’s really exciting that a movie will possibly have our store front included in it.” said Josh Beusekof, down the block at TRU Hardware.

The town says Interstellar plans to use Main Street, closing it to the public for a day or so in late August.

Several movies have already been through the area, their characters making a pit stop in Fort Macleod, most notably Brokeback Mountain and Passchendaele.

Only a few business owners say their storefront can be seen in those feature films, but neighboring businesses say the exposure benefits the whole street, although they’re still waiting for their store’s turn to shine.

“I think it’s good for the town, it gives good exposure,” said Angela Eremenuk, His & Hers Hairstyles owner.  “In Fort Macleod, we could use the business.”

Business owners say they’re happy to lend their storefront to Hollywood. Now, it’s just a waiting game for crews to move into town.

As for Lethbridge, the County confirms Interstellar will be in our area, but can’t confirm when or where.
