Const. Laura Nicolle said officers were called to a home on Ridge Gate Crescent in Mount Albert around 2:30 p.m. for reports of a stabbing.

Nicolle said a woman was found and pronounced dead, while three others — a child, an infant and a woman — were taken to hospital with “significant injuries.”

“There was an altercation with the suspect involving police and the suspect is now deceased,” Nicolle said, adding that the suspect was a man.

“We do want to ensure that the community knows that there is no ongoing public safety concern. As I said, the suspect we believe was involved with the stabbings is deceased.”

The Special Investigations Unit — Ontario’s police watchdog — said they are investigating after two police officers fatally shot the 37-year-old man.

Nicolle said there was a scene in the front of the home on the driveway, as well as inside.

Nicolle was not able to confirm the nature of the victim’s injuries, only saying that the initial call to police was for a stabbing. However, in a news release issued later Saturday evening, officers confirmed that “several people were stabbed.”

The relationship between the victims and the suspect was not immediately clear.

In a statement, the SIU said preliminary information suggests that when officers arrived at the home, they found a deceased woman at the front door and when the officers went inside the residence, they “became involved in an interaction” with a man, leading to the two officers firing their guns.

The man died at the scene.

The SIU said five of their investigators and four forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, with two designated subject officers and one witness officer.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.
