CALGARY – Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has a warning about a possible scam involving vehicle purchases in the United States.

An individual from Utah posing as a salesperson from a luxury car dealership is attempting to coerce Canadians to buy vehicles by phone or online.

Customers are then forwarded what appear to be emails from CBSA to the dealer asking for an advance bill of sale and receipt prior to having the vehicle imported to Canada.

The emails on CBSA letterhead give a North Portal, Sask. phone number.

CBSA says the emails and phone number are not connected to the agency and there is no reason to believe the individual in question is actually a legitimate car salesperson.

Officials also say verifications are not conducted over the phone or by email prior to arrival at the border for importation.
