Responsible dog owners get treats

KELOWNA — It’s usually dogs who get treats, but the Regional District of Central Okanagan is offering rewards to responsible owners.

Once you licence your pooch you’ll be enrolled into the “My Dog Matters” program and will receive a special rewards card in the mail.

The card is valid for discounts at various pet stores, groomers, dog daycare and other non-pet related businesses around Kelowna.

“The first principle of being a responsible dog owner in the Central Okanagan is licensing your pet” says RDCO Communications Officer, Bruce Smith.

“Since these dog owners are doing the right thing and following our bylaw requirement for purchasing a licence and renewing it each year, they will have an opportunity to receive rewards and get something back from the businesses participating in the program.”

Licencing your dog costs $20 for spayed and neutered pets and $60 for those not fixed.

Fines for not licencing your dog and letting your pup off leash in non-designated areas are $100 a piece. However, Smith says those fines are rising significantly come the new year. There is still no word on how much the new fines will be.
