304 tickets issued during July blitz

SASKATOON – An ongoing commitment between SGI and provincial traffic enforcement agencies continued in July, targeting pedestrian and seatbelt safety on Saskatchewan roads.

Operation Heads Up, Buckle Up took place last Wednesday and Thursday across the province resulting in 304 tickets being issued to motorists.

It was held in conjunction with the province’s fourth Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) event of 2013 in La Ronge.

North East Regional Traffic Services hosted roadside check stops in and around La Ronge on July 25 and 26 as part of a concentrated effort in partnership with provincial police agencies.

Around 20 representatives were sent to northern Saskatchewan for STEP with a common dedication to road safety.

Combined, these efforts resulted in 84 improper seatbelt violations, 16 motorists using cellphones, 107 speeders, 11 disobeying stop lights/signs and 86 other infractions.

Child car seat technicians were also busy during STEP, checking 47 seats and issuing tickets. SGI gave away 21 seats to promote child passenger safety.

In June, Operation Hang Up, Buckle Up resulted in 412 tickets being handed out in conjuncture with a STEP in Kindersley.

Next month’s STEP is in Regina and the blitz will focus on intersections.
