A 71-year-old man was rushed to hospital on Thursday after being hit by a vehicle in a southwest Calgary parking lot, police said.
The collision happened outside the Calgary Co-op on Southland Drive Southwest at around 2:20 p.m.
In a Friday news release, police said the victim was hit by a silver Ford Escape after the driver, a 90-year-old man, backed out of a parking stall.
“The driver then accelerated forward suddenly striking a 71-year-old male pedestrian near the sidewalk,” police said. “The pedestrian was carried for a short distance and then fell onto the roadway as the vehicle slowed, coming to rest against a parked vehicle.”
According to police, the pedestrian suffered serious, life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Ford wasn’t injured and remained at the scene, police said.
A large area in the Co-op parking lot, just outside the front entrance, was taped off on Thursday afternoon, and several emergency vehicles as well as the collision reconstruction unit could be seen in the area.
Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be factors in the crash, according to police.
