5 arrested in major police operation targeting drugs, firearms in Montreal

A major police operation targeting drugs and firearms in Montreal’s northeastern end has led to five arrests Wednesday afternoon.

Montreal police say raids started at 5 a.m. in both the city and the north shore as part of a the joint initiative with the Sûreté du Québec and Mascouche police departments.

More arrests are possible as “a seizure of weapons and narcotics” continues, according to investigators.

“This police operation is a response to a series of violent events that took place in northeastern Montreal recently,” Montreal police said in a statement.

Last week, police launched door-to-door visits and set up a command post in the area following a series of shootings in late November.

Investigators were looking at three shootings in Rivière-des-Prairies and another in Montreal North that occurred over the weekend. Four people were injured, according to police.
