Woman’s body pulled from Red River: source

The body pulled from the Red River in Winnipeg Saturday is female, Global News has learned.

A source close to the recovery effort Saturday morning says the body is that of a short Caucasian woman of average weight.

Official police sources confirmed a body was recovered near the Alexander docks at 9:30 Saturday morning but did not confirm the gender and say the remains have not yet been identified.

“We received a suspicious circumstances in which a caller had heard people down by the river, yelling that body had been observed,” said Const. Eric Hofley of the Winnipeg Police Service in an interview with Global News.

The body was discovered by a group of canoeists competing in a paddling event put on by the Manitoba Paddling Association.

“The younger athletes were paddling and then they discovered, unfortunately for them, a dead body,” said Jerome Seremac with the Manitoba Paddling Association. “I know this will be very tough for them, probably for the rest of their lives. It sucks because the body was up so you could see the face, and it was decomposed too.”
