Watch: Fans and local politicians fight to save Victoria observatory

An educational arm of a Victoria observatory is about to close its doors because of the shortage of funding.

Known as The Centre of the Universe, it gets nearly 10,000 people coming through each year as part of school-programs and public visits.

The facility, which operates under the national research council, is in the red.

The closure would be saving the federal government a quarter-million dollars, and some provincial politicians are asking if it’s worth it.

With the tourism and small business minister stepping in, there’s little progress.

Petitions to restore the funding are now circulating.

One launched by NDP politicians is to be presented in Ottawa this fall. The other is online with more than 1,200 signatures of support.
