A 31 year old Hamilton man is in custody after a lengthy stand-off early Monday morning.

Police shut down Wentworth Street North around 3 a.m., and surrounded a house after man told officers he had a gun, and barricaded himself inside his basement apartment.

"Our officers were on the scene for several hours trying to establish contact with him."

Police say the man threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend who lives nearby.

Neighbors CHCH News spoke with said they had no idea what was going on, but said it was frightening when officers told them to go back in their homes, because it wasn't safe to be outside."

"I said what am I going to do? He said run and don't come out till we tell you to come out."

The heavily armed Emergency Response Unit ended the standoff just before 9 o'clock.

Supt Stewart: "Our ERU officers eventually had to breach the door and they went inside and they saw him hiding in the residence."

Sison: "I was really shaken when I was talking with the Policeman, it's my first time experiencing these things."

Stanley George faces charges of threatening death, and property.
