Ontario police watchdog investigating after man, 23, falls from Ottawa apartment building

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after it said a man fell to his death in Ottawa’s east end on Wednesday morning.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said that officers with the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) were executing a search warrant at 2020 Jasmine Cres. at roughly 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Shortly after officers breached the door of a 12th floor apartment, a 23-year-old man fell from the unit’s window to the ground below, according to the preliminary information from the SIU.

The man was given medical aid but he was pronounced dead at the scene, the SIU said.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator from the SIU have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is a civilian body that investigates incidents involving police officers that result in death, serious injury or sexual assault.

The Ottawa Police Service declined to comment on the incident, deferring to the SIU.
