REGINA – An armed hostage incident at a Regina high school has ended peacefully, with a suspect in custody.
Students began to leave Luther College around 11 a.m. local time, around the time police took a young man wearing a blonde wig into custody. No one was injured in the incident.
Students were seen crying and hugging outside the private school, just hours after a youth armed with a gun took a teacher and several students hostage. About 300 students were inside the high school at the time.
The school was locked down this morning and Regina Police cruisers swarmed the neighbourhood, surrounded the school and closed off several surrounding blocks. Several police officers could be seen hunched behind parked cars with pistols drawn. Crying students were seen fleeing the building after the hostage incident ended,
A Global News reporter at the scene said she was told a former student of Luther College, carrying a handgun and wearing a blond wig, walked into the school just before the morning chapel service.
While police say the incident is now over, they're asking parents to stay away from the school while they look over the scene.
According to the private school's website, Luther College high school offers a liberal arts education with a "global perspective on learning."
The school has an enrolment of 450 students in Grades 9-12.
